Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Calcium Carbonate?

A: Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. It is a common substance found in rock in all parts of the world, and is the main component of shells of marine organism, snails, pearls and eggshells. More details, click here!

Q: What is other names for Calcium Carbonate?

A: Limestone, calcite, aragonite, chalk, marble, pearl.

Q: What is Calcium Carbonate form?

A: Calcium carbonate has two major crystalline forms, two different geometric arrangements of the calcium ions and carbonate ions that make up the compound. These two forms are called aragonite and calcite. All calcium carbonate minerals are conglomerations of various-sized crystals of these forms, packed together in different ways and containing various impurities. The large, transparent crystals known as Iceland spar, however, are pure calcite.

Q: Who discovered Calcium Carbonate?

A: It is impossible to say when humans first knew about or used compounds of calcium. Whenever they used limestone to build a structure, they were using a compound of calcium. Limestone is the common name for calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Calcium was prepared as lime by the Romans under the name calyx in the 1st century A.D., but the metal was not discovered until 1808 in England. Humphry Davy (1788-1829) was a major contributor to the field of electrochemistry. He is best known for discovering calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, and barium. Using his knowledge of electricity, Davy built a large battery which he used to break down substances most scientists thought were pure element. In 1808, he used a slightly modified method to isolate calcium, magnesium, barium, and strontium.

Q: Where is Calcium can be found?

A: Calcium carbonate, or CaCO3, comprises more than 4% of the earth’s crust and is found throughout the world. It’s most common natural forms are chalk, limestone, and marble, produced by the sedimentation of the shells of small fosillized snails, shellfish, and coral over millions of years. Although all three forms are identical in chemical terms, they differ in many other respects, including purity, whiteness, thickness and homogeneity. Calcium carbonate is one of the most useful and versatile materials known to man.

Q: What is Calcium Carbonate used for?

A: The main use of calcium carbonate is in the construction industry, either as a building material or limestone aggregate for roadbuilding or as ingredient of cement or as the starting material for the preparation of builder’s lime by burning in a kiln. Calcium carbonate is also used in the purification of iron from iron ore in a blast furnace. Calcium carbonate is also used in the oil industry in drilling fluids as a formation bridging and filtercake sealing agent and may also be used as a weighting material to increase the density of drilling fluids to control downhole pressures. In health and dietary applications, calcium carbonate is widely used medicinally as an inexpensive dietary calcium supplement or gastric antacid. It may be used as a phosphate binder for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia (primarily in patients with chronic renal failure). It also used in the pharmaceutical industry as an inert filler for tablets and other pharmaceuticals. For more details, click here.
